Sonrise Community Baptist Church is a fellowship of believers located in Northeast Calgary, devoted to the worship of the one true God, the preaching of the gospel of Jesus Christ, and the furtherance of His kingdom in this world.
We have existed as a church since 1986, but have been worshipping in our Northeast location since the winter of 1997. It was here that we would become known as, "The Little Country Church in the City," due to our church building's purchase from Three Hills Alberta, and consequent transport to Calgary. We have been blessed to worship at this location ever since, and have seen the Lord work mightily in our city over these many years.
Though we are a church that share many deep convictions regarding the Bible's teaching about the church, there are three distinctives that we believe to be central of Sonrise's identity since its inception. Those being:
As Paul states in 1 Corinthians 2:2, "For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified." The most important thing to this apostle's ministry was Jesus Christ. All other matters were considered of lesser value, even a distraction from the great focus of King Jesus and his gospel.
We at Sonrise deeply resonate with this statement. Nothing to us as a church is more important than the Lord Jesus Christ. In all that we do as believers, and all that it spoken forth from the pulpit, we endeavor that Christ would always maintain our primary focus. We understand that if anything is going to keep us united, grounded, and healthy as a church, while ensuring the salvation of lost men, it will be Christ and him crucified. Therefore, he is central.
The family is God's design; His own glorious creation instituted at the very beginning of time. In the family, God secures a generational name for himself (Deut 6:4-25), displays the beauty of Christ's relationship with the church (Eph 5:22-33), and even prepares disciples to see the kingdom advanced (Ps 127:3-5). The family is critical for the world, and therefore critical to the church.
In an age of confusion, and destruction, we want to elevate the beauty of God's design in the family. At Sonrise we seek to thoroughly instruct families from the Word of God regarding the joy and responsibility of their callings. We also encourage the participation of all, young and old in our service, to benefit from the teaching of Scripture.
As the body of Jesus Christ, we are called to be his hands and feet to those around us. Though the church has been called out of the world in terms of sin, she is still to function in the world for the sake of the gospel (1 Cor 5:9-10). It is therefore our mission, to reach out to those lost and in need of the saving power of Jesus Christ.
We do this by means of our general care and kindness to those around us, ministering to the needs of those poor and destitute after the pattern of our Savior. Yet, we do this primarily by means of evangelism: taking the gospel to a broken world. Our deep affection for the state of souls compels us to share the exculsive hope found in Jesus Christ, the one who can save them.
Our church is affiliated with The Canadian Baptists of Western Canada, otherwise know as the CBWC.
