"Take up your cross and follow me," is Jesus' command of all prospective disciples. If you want to be a Christian, then you must be ready to experience what Jesus Christ experienced before you. Namely, rejection, scorn, abandonment, and maybe even death; all consequences of association with the Lord. You must pick up the instrument of your opposition in this world, and boldly follow in the footsteps of your master.
Jesus' invite to Christianity is by no means soft and gentle. Rather, it is weighty and difficult. But the result associated is so glorious, there is hardly any reason to consider what we might experience as a result, as suffering at all.
